Mitral valve disease in patients with Marfan syndrome undergoing aortic root replacement.

BACKGROUND Cardiac manifestations of Marfan syndrome include aortic root dilation and mitral valve prolapse (MVP). Only scant data exist describing MVP in patients with Marfan syndrome undergoing aortic root replacement. METHODS AND RESULTS We retrospectively analyzed data from 166 MFS patients with MVP who were enrolled in a prospective multicenter registry of patients who underwent aortic r...

Cardiovascular magnetic resonance follow-up of the Marfan's thoracic aorta after personalized external aortic root support surgery

Background Recently, personalized external aortic root support (PEARS) has been proposed as an alternative prophylactic surgery to prevent dilatation of the aortic root and dissection in Marfan syndrome patients. Briefly, a model of each patient’s aortic root and ascending aorta is created based on cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) images. The model is then used to produce a bespoke external aor...

Bicuspid Aortic Valve: An Unusual Cause of Aneurysm of Left Coronary Sinus of Valsalva

Bicuspid aortic valve is traditionally considered an innocuous congenital anomaly. Due to a better and widespread availability of non-invasive imaging techniques, it has come to the fore that 30% of these cases develop complications, viz., valve abnormality (aortic regurgitation and stenosis), and aneurysm of aortic root and ascending aorta. Sinus of Valsalva aneurysm is an uncommon complicatio...

Cardiovascular problems in pregnant women with marfan syndrome.

Case presentation: A 34-year-old Korean woman with Marfan syndrome (MFS) was referred for cardiac evaluation in the 24th week of her first pregnancy. Although she was diagnosed with MFS at the age of 7 years, the patient did not have cardiac evaluations before her pregnancy. An echocardiogram demonstrated mildly dilated left ventricle with normal systolic function, moderately dilated left atriu...

Right sided heart evaluation after successful mitral valve replacement.

Introduction: It is well-documented that right-sided heart dysfunction and significant tricuspid valve regurgitation (TVR) have adverse effects on patient outcomes after left-sided heart valve surgery. Therefore, the evaluation of right ventriclular (RV) function and TR severity in patients who had undergone mitral valve replacement (MVR), associated with/without concomitant su...
